Indus Divas In Interview with Mrs Anjali Singh :
1.Ma’am tell us more about yourself?
I was Born in Bhopal in 1978 and my Father was working in bank so we did a lot of travelling in our formative years. in bank so transferable job. I wanted a become an air hostess , My dream but Due to some reasons and I was very good in studies so Finally settled in Lucknow, Schooling from carmel convent, Inter from IT College and then finally PG from Lko Univ.As I told I Wanted to become an Air Hostess so did lot many certification courses in Travel & Tourism , But that moment could not leave Lucknow cause of Family restrictions, so finally dropped the idea of Tourism and jumped into normal marketing job in Lko.
2. So Ma’am How this Association with Jute Artisans happened?
After 9 years frustrated from pvt job , 1 day immediately decided to do something of my own. Talked to father who was retired from bank and was running an NGO by the name of Bhartiya Sewa Sansthan. Got training projects form from National Jute Board to form women self help groups and give them livelihood generating activity of making jute bags.
As always since childhood wanted to help the poor and needy so when saw around 2500 such trained rural poor women at different locations, in hand so thought of taking courage of starting something of own which will benefit the ladies as well as give me satisfaction to work and was also in a position to take risk as husband was earning good in a pvt company.
3.What you do currently?Tell us about any current projects or initiatives you wish to promote?
We manufacture Jute Diversified Products for Official / Corporate/ Event/ Industrial and Individual needs. Before taking the shape of a Company, our organization was a Federation of Women Self Help Groups. We have an association of 200 rural women artisans with us making jute bags and other products with annual turnover of Rs. 85 lakhs. From March 2017, we have transformed ourselves in a Pvt Ltd. Company by the name of Jute artisans Guild Pvt Ltd (a STAND UP India Initiative). The Company will be devoted to manufacturing good quality jute products and its marketing as well as providing good quality training to the artisans on an ongoing basis.
4.Great Initiative ma’am.We would love to know What challenges did you faced in achieving this success?
Initially Motivating women to step out to work was a major one. Staff management as initially was not backed by any financial support from family. Managed all from my salaries savings, FD, PF, etc, so could not give good salaries, so had to manage and convince.Getting Raw material from Kolkata was tough as the supplier asked for 100% advance and min quantity 1000 mts, so did not had any backup support so faced lot of difficulty.Sometimes, convincing rural women under the thrall of patriarchy to understand the benefit of becoming self- dependent (traditional thinking).Quality control due to handicraft item made by different hands.Anjali Singh
As I was the first person in family that too Women, so my work was not at all looked upon with interest by few of them. But I proved to them that only Family Business do not run. Any one with a zeal to work can DO ANYTHING.
