Geetikaa Kakkar was brought up in a conservative family. But she was given the freedom to
explore her intellect with loads of books and that’s what helped her to be what she is today.
Being painfully shy and introvert person books were her constant companion. Through the
books she has seen the world. The culture, dresses, way of living have been her points of
Painting was one of Geetikaa’s favorite pastime apart from reading. Her mom got her
interested in handicraft & taught all her daughters the basics of knitting, crochet, tatting,
playing the harmonium etc. Her mother had a beautiful voice and both her parents would sing
their favorite song –a song from Raj Kapoor’s film.
“Being the eldest in the family with 5 brothers and sisters I had to grow up and be responsible
Spirituality, simple living and high thinking has been a way of life for all. None of us
has the killer instinct of winning at any cost. Maybe that’s why I feel lost in today’s cutthroat
times”, says Geetikaa.
Geetikaa Kakkar graduated in 1977 from Lady Irwin College in B.SC. Home Science. Her degree in B.Sc. is what further ignited her interest in crafts. She learnt various crafts like tie and dye, batik, soap and cream making etc. She got married the same year & had a son and daughter within 2 years. Geetikaa says that the most beautiful time of her life was watching her children grow.
A time came when Geetikaa Kakkar had to relook at her life and had to financially support
herself. The childhood lessons of hard
work, perseverance and focus helped her to give wings to her effort. The result is her enterprise
Geetikaa Kakkar said- “It was divine intervention when Gauri came asking for help. I was picking up the pieces of my life. She was totally devastated due to her husband’s wayward ways & wanted to restart again.”
Geetikaa adds, “The best way to get going is to work and which I did. Knitting is an art which
almost every woman in the mountains knows & it was easy to teach her the finer points. Being the easiest way to start earning I had 10 women at the end of the month who also wanted to learn and earn from home.”
This was the start of women empowerment through income generation while working as full
time homemakers. Working with these women was a healing process for Geetikaa too. Today,
there are 60 proud and happy women working under Gauri International.
“We have taken a few steps up the ladder of becoming known for making quality hand knitted
garments and pure aloe vera gel. Our garments are trendy, smart, affordable, good quality and
for all women.
The aloe vera gel is being sold on Amazon under PURE ALOE VERA GEL –Gauri International. It’s available in a few retail outlets in Dehradun”, said Geetikaa.
New products of aloe vera will be introduced shortly.
From 2005 to 2007 they were working in hit and trial mode. But after the company was
registered for the first time Geetikaa participated in Trade fair, New Delhi. This was after she
approached DIC (district of industries center) Dehradun and got registered as a small
scaleindustry. She says that the experience was great and opened her eyes to a lot of things.
They then increased their range of items from just bedspreads to garments. In the meantime
in their annual fair “Nature Bazaar” at DilliHaat.
However, In 2010 she got a stall with Blind School Diwali Mela as she had been approaching them every
year. This was because of the quantity of items being made by 80 women who were working
with her at that time and she wanted to test a different section of society. Response was good
and she realized what areas needed more attention.
In 2013 Geetikaa Kakkar approached AIACA to get craftmark certification and was able to get it after a
whole process of being vetted. The same year Himjoli’s Mr. Pankaj Wadhwa approached her for
selling goods through their outlets all over Uttarakhand. It was an excellent opportunity for
more women to join as the word had spread around and at that point she approximately had
160 women associated.
In 2014 Geetikaa Kakkar joined Dastkaari Haat run by Jaya Jaitely ji and that was also an inspiration for
