In the year 1998, when she was just a school student, Romita Ghosh was diagnosed with a type of blood cancer. At an age where most kids spend their time playing outside, most of Romita’s time would get spent on her bed, tired and drained out from the long chemo sessions.
But she did not let this hinder her spirit and always kept believing in herself. She vowed to herself to make the most of this gift called ‘life’. Since then, there has been no looking back for Romita.
A few years later, this woman of substance graduated in Biotechnology from the Kerala University. She did double majors in Biotech and Biochemistry. Later on, she successfully completed her MBA in Biotech from Amity Business School in Noida. After which, Romita began her career in healthcare management.
It was while she was in Bangalore that Romita was completely consumed by the idea of entrepreneurship. This gave way to the foundation of Admirus Marksol Pvt. Ltd. The idea of MedSamaan was born when Romita was undertaking a management course at IIM Udaipur. MedSamaan is an online platform that provides medical equipment. The idea behind this was to make healthcare accessible and affordable to all.
Romita Ghosh is a successful entrepreneur today and she recently also got an opportunity to share her story and work with Cherie Blaire foundation.
Romita’s journey to where she is today wasn’t an easy one. But then again, anything worth having never comes easy. Upon asking what her biggest challenges were, Romita said that the challenges she faced as a woman and as an entrepreneur weren’t very different. She faced rejection and dismissal. But with every obstruction in her path, she came back even stronger. “I had to break the conventional societal norms associated with women to carve my own niche and obtain my freedom. There were times when I had to completely give up my social life as very few could understand me. I have often been told that I cannot do certain things. But I knew it wasn’t true, as no one has a right to dictate our capabilities. These challenges made me work harder and come back as a stronger and more determined person”, says Romita.
Romita considers her power to make a difference in a patient’s life her biggest achievement. From being dismissed earlier, today Romita has investors who want to invest in her start-up and people who believe in her vision.
Furniture making is Romita’s biggest passion. Going to her studio on a stressful day and with all the quirky stuff that she picked up or designed is her way of de-stressing herself. Another hobby that Romita enjoys is photography. And she considers herself lucky to have gotten a few awards and featured in exhibitions.
Romita plans on extending MedSamaan and growing it further in the coming future. She also hopes to write a book someday and also travel around the world.
Romita Ghosh: Romita’s message to her readers:
“Take risks, make bold decisions and stand by them. You would be put to test each moment for a hard decision but don’t give up. Be true to yourself, and the world will adjust to you, eventually.”
