We all are aware of the fact that plastic is extremely hazardous to our environment. Even after being aware of this fact, we make use of it in an irresponsible way. It takes years together for plastic to get destroyed. Over 100 years are required for its decomposition. And still, it gets used in such large amounts every day. Therefore, plastic recycling is the need of the hour.
But, at some places the use of plastic remains unavoidable. So what option does it leave us with? The answer to this question is- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Miss Juee Makarand Pandharipande, a young lady in her early 20s along with her mother, Mrs Manjusha Pandharipande is contributing efforts towards the initiative of responsible handling of plastic. One segment of their work involves conducting awareness programs on reduce, reuse and recycle of plastic. The awareness programs are conducted at various social gatherings, schools, colleges etc.
The other segment involves collection of plastic once in a week from schools, offices, colleges etc. The plastic is then diverted to plastic recycling indutries. Approximately 600 to 700 kilograms of this material gets collected every week. This huge amount of plastic is prevented from being thrown on streets. Just imagine the hazard that would occur if this large amount of plastic is thrown on the streets. The also provide cloth bags to various vendors and ask them not to use plastic bags.
Depending upon the grade of plastic, the plastic industry purchases it, thus generating revenue. This mother-daughter duo also spreads awareness among the society about the importance of segregation of garbage. The garbage baskets are also made from recycled plastic.
This social work initiated by these two dynamic ladies has started gaining acknowledgement from the society. And today, people from various organizations have joined hand in hand and have started helping too.
The efforts taken by these two women of substance are truly appreciable. Let’s hope that the whole country looks upon them for inspiration and takes this issue of plastic recycling seriously.
